I’ve written numerous blogs about the importance and impact of networking, but it still never ceases to amaze me how much support and professional generosity there is in our School Business Leader network.
The ISBL national conference last week was a joyous occasion. The only thing which would have made it more glowing would be if we’d slipped it into December and included Christmas! Even then, the penguins in the hotel foyer made it feel a bit Christmassy, so I didn’t feel too out of place in a sparkly dress for the gala dinner!
I admit that I last went to this event in 2018. A lot has happened (to us all) in 5 years but the SBL community is unwavering in its continued support of each other, and I am so grateful to be part of it.
It reminds me of the JFK quote “Ask not what your country can do for you…” and makes me ask what else, if anything, I can offer the SBL community? There are so many amazing practitioners out there. Some leading trusts, some working in LAs, some working in stand-alone schools, and some, like me, offering their skills as a consultant for short-term targeted support when needed. We each bring something different to the SBL table, and I never get the feeling we are trying to compete, just that we are trying to do our best for the schools, and communities we work with.
My own ‘what else’? has got to be continued writing. It’s not going to change the world, but if it makes just one SBL feel more positive, motivated, informed or entertained (probably not all at the same time!), then it’s worth doing. It’s something I’ve got which I can give back.
As I descend back to earth (aka my desk) after the conference and get back to the daily humdrum of the SBL, I just want to thank everyone at ISBL for another fabulous event. It felt like we were there to celebrate all SBLs, whether you were there or not, and whether you are a member or not. It reminded me that no SBL is alone in their role, so whenever you are in need of support, reach out and you too will be amazed at how many SBLs are ready to help.
PS For those who were there – I’ve started reading the book on Mind Management. I need to know more about my inner chimp!
