These last weeks of the autumn term are undoubtedly the most fun in the school year. How can you not enjoy the excitement and energy of children of all ages looking forward to Christmas?

Working in a school is unlike any other work environment. When, for all staff, work centres around a focus on the success of others, the result is a sharing culture of supporting each other.

This week, December 11th marks International Mountain Day, creating awareness of the importance of mountains and their habitats to life. It's an excuse to take a moment to revel in the beauty of Scafell Pike which I climbed with my Dad as a child. Nearly half a century later, I climbed close to the top of Snowdon with my son and this is the photo which makes me smile. It was August. The train wasn't running and the cafe was closed. When we could no longer see our hands in front of our face and I began to be seriously worried about the wind sweeping us off the path, we turned back. My legs can still feel the 22,000 steps we did that day.

Life is about challenges, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, and then feeling really proud of what you've achieved. Our beautiful and diverse countryside offers so much opportunity for outside-of-the-classroom learning. We need to continue to enable pupils to challenge themselves and experience environments outside of their day-to-day. In the UK, you don't need to go far to do that.

Take some time this week to get outside yourself.
